Taxonomic distinctness and diversity measures: responses in marine fish communities

چکیده

In a recent paper Warwick & Clarke (1995: Mar Ecol Prog Ser 129:301-305) introduced 2 new measures of community diversity, A and A' These measures dlffer from more conventional d~ver sity indices by incorporating the taxonomic relatedness of species into their calculation. In this paper we compare temporal trends in A and A' with more conventional diversity measures for the demersal fish community of the northern North Sea. We show that, contrary to the findings for benthic invertebrates, indces that incorporate taxonomic distinctness show identical time trends to conventional measures. This, perhaps, suggests that when perturbations are sufficiently large to affect conventional indices of diversity, taxonomic diversity indices may already have reached levels from which they march in step with conventional indices.

Parasite biodiversity and its determinants in coastal marine teleost fishes of Brazil.

Recent studies of the forces behind the diversification of parasite assemblages have shed light on many aspects of parasite biodiversity. By using only parasite species richness as their measure of diversity, however, previous investigations have ignored the relatedness among parasite species and the taxonomic structure of the assemblages, which contain much information about their evolutionary...

Taxonomic Distinctness of Demersal Fishes of the California Current: Moving Beyond Simple Measures of Diversity for Marine Ecosystem-Based Management

BACKGROUND Large-scale patterns or trends in species diversity have long interested ecologists. The classic pattern is for diversity (e.g., species richness) to decrease with increasing latitude. Taxonomic distinctness is a diversity measure based on the relatedness of the species within a sample. Here we examined patterns of taxonomic distinctness in relation to latitude (ca. 32-48 degrees N) ...

Application of an indicator based on taxonomic relatedness of ciliated protozoan assemblages for marine environmental assessment.

INTRODUCTION Ciliated protozoa play important roles in aquatic ecosystems especially regarding their functions in micro-food web and have many advantages in environmental assessment compared with most other eukaryotic organisms. The aims of this study were focused on analyzing the application of an indicator based on taxonomic relatedness of ciliated protozoan assemblages for marine environment...

Linking ecology with parasite diversity in Neotropical fishes

A comparative analysis was performed to seek large-scale patterns in the relationships between a set of fish species traits (body size, type of environment, trophic level, schooling behaviour, depth range, mean habitat temperature, geographical range, ability to enter brackish waters and capability of migration) and the diversity of their metazoan parasite assemblages among 651 Neotropical fish...

Host introductions and the geography of parasite taxonomic diversity

Aim Geographical variation in parasite diversity is examined among populations of fish in their original heartland and in areas where they have been introduced. The diversity in heartland and introduced populations is contrasted, and also compared with the expectations of a null model. Location Data on the parasite communities of two salmonid fish species were obtained: the rainbow trout Oncorh...
